Fred Whitehead was born in Pratt, Kansas, in 1944. After
working on farms and the Rock Island Railroad, he attended
the University of Kansas (1962-65), went to England on a
Fulbright scholarship (1965-66), and earned graduate degrees
from Columbia University (M.A. 1967, Ph.D. 1972). He co-edited
Freethought on the American Frontier (Prometheus Books,
1992), and The Whole Song: Selected Poetry of Vincent Ferrini
(with Ken Warren, University of Illinois Press, 2004). He edited
the Complete Poems of Don Gordon (University of Illinois Press,
2004), and has contributed to various reference works.
